Interesting choice of subject; it’s something that generally we take for granted, though enjoy it when it has presented itself (whether it comes to us unexpectedly and at random, or we create our own).
For what it’s worth, I think happiness, contentment, and so on, are various levels of the same fundamental emotion.
When I’m happy, the feeling is more intense than when I am simply content. Likewise with being thrilled. And interestingly, the more intense the feeling, the more fleeting.

Are happiness and contentment really that separate, or perhaps just different ways of expressing what are similar states?

Probably. Use of one or other depends I think on your temperament!
