Great stuff, as ever, Ant. And Happy New Year to you! Starting the New Year in March, to shave three months off gym membership, sounds a very good idea to me by the way.
I think resolutions are a very good idea, and I’ve been making and recording them diligently for quite a few years. The important thing is that you have to review them and ( if need be) amend them regularly throughout the year. This fits precisely with your point about needing to hold ourselves to account throughout the year, and not just on a (presumably somewhat hungover) first day of January.
I share your doubts about the usefulnesss of New Year resolutions, and I have never made them. The history was interesting.
