A very good, witty piece Ant. I agree with you – I too don’t just want an academic relationship: there needs to be some room for humour, anecdote, impressions and the like. But, as you imply, reason should always be steering the ship. Reason seems to be getting a dirty name for itself now, viewed suspiciously in much of academe ( I fear) as part of the unreformed colonialist, racist, heteronormative, transphobic project. So Plato won’t even be allowed to put in an appearance soon…
