Wonderful to hear of your adventures, Ant. So pleased you had a lovely time, with safe travels.
I myself would choose a cosy, hollowed-out oak tree in the middle of a deep, dark forest, far away from noise and pollution, to carry out my non religious hermitage. There is something a part of me finds deeply appealing about being hidden away from the harshness and superficiality of human life, and living simply, entirely in tune with Nature and her cycles.
